Schools High
School Shows - People’s
attitudes are influenced by others and manipulated by the media.
According to the Board of Senior School Studies, the only compulsory
subject is English. If a subject like ‘Society and Culture’
was compulsory, all Australian students would leave school with
a standard understanding and fairer attitude towards society, especially
minority groups. It is disheartening to find such terms like “deaf
+ dumb” and “handicapped” are still being used
today. This story is delivered through the eyes of a deaf
teenager and his experiences of dealing with hearing people who
project prejudice and intimidation towards him. We aim to highlight
the repercussions of stereotyping and give students an awareness
about judging individuals. Students will appreciate the importance
of recognising, acknowledging and respecting the individual.
