Language of One was a bilingual production, using both sign and spoken language. The story was told through central characters with shadow interpreting. This was the first time the company had employed this technique, and it was also a long awaited return for sign language on stage in Sydney.

Language of One explored the identity of The Self. The internal tug of war for Albert Rose (the plays Deaf, Gay, Jewish protagonist) explored issue of belonging, identity and relationships.

What the press said ....

"In a festival the magnitude of Mardi Gras, some events can get lost in amongst the glitter and the hype. Language of One, a glorious piece by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf, is one such gem . Managing to steer clear of stereotypes, Language of One is a powerful piece on the search for the Self...the production itself is hauntingly beautiful. Skilful lighting and bold use of space... and the acting is sublime." Campaign Magazine Feb 1999.

"Little voice, but much to think about... Julia Cottons direction, bought freshness, clarity and a shot of faith to complex issues."
Sydney Morning Herald
